Designed by Australian artist, Evan Davis, these bathroom porcelain works of art have received international recognition as they have been shipped world-wide for the last 9 months from Australia. From Switzerland to Italy to America, these elegant art basins have caught the eye of the discerning home-maker cum art lover. Each round basin is individually hand-made on the Potters Wheel using porcelain or stoneware clay of the highest quality. The artist uses at least 10kg of clay for every piece of basin that he creates. Such a large amount of clay is used to ensure that each piece is thick and therefore strong and durable.
The vibrant colours are created using Zinc Silicate crystals glazes. These are considered the most spectacular of all glazing techniques. In order to ensure originality, the glazes are formulated specially by the artist himself and are not commercially available. As the glazes give each individual basin its special colour and character, the artist closely guards the recipe of his glaze formulas and is therefore a trade secret. Each bathroom basin is individually glazed using up to six different glaze formulations. The different combinations of glazes give rise to a whole array of colours ranging from subtle whites, pinks and greens to bold blues and yellows.
The entire process for one basin takes about two to three weeks: from the wheel to the kiln to the showroom. Evan treats his works as art pieces and hence he is very meticulous and particular about the entire creation process. Ever with a sense of humour, Evan says: “I love my craft and being able to transform a lump of clay into a work of art. In addition to the different colours, the art basins also come in different sizes; the smallest being 37cm in diameter to the largest which is 50cm in diameter. Being a true artist, Evan has also created a unique shape to bathroom basins, that is, an Eight-sided basin. Besides its aesthetics appeal, this octagon-shaped basin will also appeal to those who find the number Eight auspicious.
